NRMIG Meeting at ALA Annual 2008

Name: ALCTS Networked Resources and Metadata Interest Group
Event: Annual discussion and business meeting
Date: Sunday, June 29, 2008
Time: 8:00 am.-10:00 am. (business meeting from approx. 9:15 am.-10:00 am.)
Place: Disneyland Hotel, North Exhibit Hall, Meeting Room B

The summer meeting of the Networked Resources and Metadata Interest Group at ALA Annual will consist of a discussion followed by a business meeting. The topic of the discussion is “IT Support in Cataloging Departments.” We want your questions!

In March of this year, Erin Stalberg from NCSU posed some questions on the metadatalibrarians list about the existence of organizational models which combine both metadata competencies and MARC competencies. The questions elicited few answers and much interest. We would like to devote our meeting time to an open discussion of issues such as technical competencies, metadata competencies, workflows which accommodate both Marc and other metadata schemas, and ways in which these skillsets can be brought into our departments and have them support all of our workflows.

Please comment on this blog post by including your questions and concerns about how your organization is blending traditional and new metadata skillsets and workflows. We will collect them and include them in the discussion.

Thank you for making the Networked Resources and Metadata Interest Group such a lively and informative group!

2008/9 Chair

  1. Steven Miller says:

What should LIS Schools be teaching students to help prepare them for jobs that require the blend of traditional MARC skills and new metadata skills?

  2. kmarti says:

How should library IT departments work with technical services departments? What skills belong in IT departments and when are technical services departments better served by having these skills in-house? How can we foster new technical competencies within technical services departments?

  3. saideng says:

What are the technical competencies for a Metadata Librarian? Which type of experience is more important, project management or metadata cataloging? What is a Metadata Librarian’s role in an institutional repository? Are programming skills a plus to this position, or rather, those types of skills should be sought in System Department? Which unit does your library put the Metadata Librarian position, Technical Services or Special Collections? How to coordinate the relationships between these two units in terms of special projects?
