This is a report on the Metadata Interest Group program, which occurred Sunday June 24 2018, at 9:00 a.m. during the ALA Annual Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Presentation (9:00am-9:30am)
The Cataloging Lab: encouraging collaboration for a more effective and inclusive LCSH proposal process
Violet Fox
The meeting began with a presentation by Violet Fox, “The Cataloging Lab: encouraging collaboration for a more effective and inclusive LCSH proposal process”. She provided a background on existing methods for creating and submitting proposals for new or edited subject headings. She then explained the impetus for creating a collaborative wiki where anyone who is interested in making LCSH more responsive to users’ needs can work together with others to create proposals to add or change headings. Finally, she walked attendees through the process of using and contributing to proposals through the wiki. Those who weren’t able to attend the session can find out more about the origin of the Cataloging Lab at https://www.libraryjournal.com/?detailStory=creating-change-in-the-cataloging-lab-peer-to-peer-review.
